Oct. 2022 OYC Newsletter

Message from the Commodore:

2022 has been a great year for OYC! I reported earlier this year that the officers were working on several improvement strategies to strengthen the club. There has been an increased focus on bolstering membership, refreshing the website, Signal Boat upholstery updates, Lakewide regatta participation, and many other topics. The team has really come together to accomplish some great things. The Wednesday Night Series saw participation at pre-2020 levels again, and it is encouraging that sailing on Lake Norman is back to normal. Four boats traveled to LNYC for the annual Labor Day regatta with first, second, and third place finishes in the Non-Spinnaker fleet. Way to go,

Team! The WNS award dinner was a great social event with excellent attendance at Imagery. Big thanks to John and MaryBeth Scharer for organizing!

Please make plans to show up in force for the Peninsula Cup October 14th-16th. PYC has restructured the entry fees to encourage more of the crew to enjoy the onshore dinner on Saturday night. The highest impact way to win the club award again is to overwhelm the competition with participation, and it has worked in our favor for the past 2 years running. The NOR and registration link is here:

https://www.peninsulayacht.com/peninsula-cup-regatta OYC has the first 2 registrants well ahead of time, and we need more boats to participate, especially in the cruising class.

In closing, I am very proud of the OYC Board over the last 12 months, and I believe the foundations have been strengthened to propel us even further for years to come.

I look forward to seeing you on the water for the Commodore’s Cup on Saturday, October 22nd.

Message from the Vice Commodore:

As the summer season ends and the fall/winter sailing season begins, we have a lot going on around the club. Some of the events planned for this Fall and Winter are the new night race on October 1, The Peninsula Cup Regatta on October 14-16, and The PYC Fellowship Ship series on Sunday afternoons (which has already begun but not too late to join in on the fun.) We also have the Commodores Cup on October 22, followed by our annual Commodores dinner, Turkey Trot, aka I-77 race, scheduled for November, and then lastly, the Carolina Keel Boat One Design race on November 12th and 13th at the LNYC.

The racing season has been a great success so far, and the OYC has been doing well, placing in almost all the major events on the lake. The WNS was especially exciting, with almost every division winner being decided at the final race. Congratulations to the winners.

If you plan on any racing this fall, we would hope you would join us for the Peninsula Cup Regatta. It is a multi-day event with lots of activities on the schedule. See the attached flyer for more details. If you don’t already know, OYC was the winner of the Yacht Club Challenge last year, and we would very much like to win it again. Our chances of winning not only

bank on winning boats but the number of boats entered in

the race. They are hoping to have several one-design classes

and there will be a cruisers class for those who are not quite

so competitive. We personally have participated in the last

several years (minus covid years) and always have a great

time, so please consider signing up and joining the OYC for a

a fun-filled weekend of racing and fellowship.

Message from the Rear Commodore:

I would like to thank the members who volunteered at the Club this year.

To date, 67% of the Full members have volunteered and will receive a $40 Volunteer Credit toward their 2023 dues. If you have not volunteered yet, there are still opportunities to do so, including assisting with the Annual Meeting/Commodore’s Cup and our Holiday event. Our next social event is the Annual Meeting/Commodore’s Cup on Saturday, October 22nd, and will be held at Imagery. Our food theme for this event is Oktoberfest, with the Club providing bratwurst, potato salad, and red cabbage. Like previous social events, we will ask everyone to contribute a dish. Be on the lookout in the coming week for a SignUp Genius invite. We also plan to have a Holiday Social in late November or early December. More details will be shared as soon as we determine the date and secure a location. I look forward to seeing everyone on the water and at the Annual Meeting/Commodore’s Cup on Saturday, October 22nd!

Fair winds,

John Scharer

Rear Commodore
